Google has made a decision that could reshape the Android ecosystem: starting this month, all development of the operating system will take place in a private setting. Despite this dramatic shift, the corporation emphasizes that Android will remain open — its source code will be published after each update, just as it was with Android 16.
According to an official statement, the main motive behind this change is to streamline internal processes. Previously, Google maintained two development branches: a public one (AOSP) and an internal one. This dual approach often led to conflicts when merging code — for instance, adding new features to accessibility settings or implementing an API for data storage required manually reconciling differences between branches. Nevertheless, Android will retain its status as an open platform; the source code will still be available after each release. The key change, however, is that public development of components will cease — now, every update will undergo internal testing before eventually appearing in AOSP.
Experts have pinpointed two main risks:
- Reduced Transparency: Journalists and analysts will lose the opportunity to uncover “clues” about future features within the AOSP code — just as they previously did when details emerged about the built-in Pixel webcam or the release date for Android 16.
- Restrictions for External Developers: Community involvement in the platform’s evolution will be significantly curtailed — only partners with a GMS license will be permitted to make contributions.
For the average user, these changes will likely go unnoticed, as smartphones will continue to receive updates through their manufacturers. However, enthusiasts who develop custom ROMs are expected to encounter delays. On the upside, the changes could accelerate overall development speeds; for example, the testing period for Android 17 might be shortened.
