This fantasy role-playing game takes place in Avernum, an underground land of tunnels and caverns dotted with towns, dungeons, and settlements of unusual inhabitants. Its self-contained story centers on the fight against invaders and does not require familiarity with earlier games in the series.
The player explores the subterranean world, completes main and side quests, and can pursue any of three distinct ways to bring the conflict to an end. Combat draws on spells and battle disciplines, while character development includes choosing beneficial traits. Avernum 2: Crystal Souls also features magical artifacts to find and more than 100 towns and dungeons to explore.
