This casual baseball game centers on matches between teams of young athletes playing in the backyard. In Backyard Baseball, players build a roster from 30 characters, including Pablo Sanchez, practice batting, track statistics, and set the rules. Its controls are simplified, while the rules blend elements of professional baseball and Little League: bunting and tagging up are allowed, but leading off and injuries are not.
Modes include quick pickup games with randomly assigned teams, single games with players chosen from a random pool, and a season mode. In a season, a team plays a 14-game series, after which the top teams enter the playoffs and championship series. Tracked statistics include home runs, strikeouts, and season wins.
