Combining action, role-playing, strategy, and tower defense, Bardbarian follows Brad, a barbarian tired of fighting who takes up a lute fashioned from an axe to defend his besieged town. Music becomes a way to summon fighters and support them in battle.

The player moves Brad across the battlefield, dodges attacks, and gathers notes to spend on musical abilities. Summoned units fight alongside him as he protects the town’s crystal from waves of enemies. Surviving waves yields loot and unlocks new units; after a defeat, Brad, the town, and the followers can be upgraded. The game also features Endless and Survival modes.
