Boulder Dash is an arcade puzzle game set in underground caves, where Rockford tunnels through the earth to collect diamonds. Each cave requires him to gather a set number of them within a time limit while avoiding boulders and other hazards. Rocks and objects fall when the earth beneath them is removed, and obstacles include amoebas, butterflies, and fireflies.

Once enough diamonds have been collected, the cave exit opens. Reaching it requires Rockford to account for the layout of obstacles and avoid falling boulders or getting trapped. The caves have different designs, and each offers five difficulty levels.
