Dark Chess is an asymmetric strategy puzzle game built around chess rules and fog of war, which conceals the opposing army. The player must assess the visible parts of the board, infer what may be hidden, and take tactical risks rather than rely on familiar openings.

The single-player story campaign pits the player against historical rulers, including Genghis Khan, King Solomon, and Ivan the Terrible. As bosses, they bend the rules with abilities such as respawning pieces, randomized traps, and poisoned boards; victory calls for bypassing their defenses and eliminating the King or Queen. Puzzles test spatial reasoning, while achievements for solving them and defeating bosses unlock visual upgrades for the avatar.
