Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires is a strategy action game set during the Three Kingdoms era, with the unification of ancient China as its central goal. The player takes the role of a hero seeking to bring the country under their rule, combining military campaigns with strategy.
Battles pit a single warrior against large numbers of enemies, carrying on the tactical action associated with the WARRIORS series. Strategic decisions and victories in battle both contribute to the struggle to unify China.
