Set in 16th-century America, Expeditions: Conquistador is a turn-based role-playing strategy game about a Spanish expedition driven by the pursuit of gold and fame. Its two campaigns take the party through a wilderness marked by natural dangers and conflict with native peoples, while player choices can lead to diplomacy or confrontation.

Players assemble an expedition from more than 30 characters, taking their traits, opinions, and moral standards into account, then train its members for combat. Exploration of the New World is combined with resource management and tactical, turn-based battles across varied terrain. Diplomacy and battlefield tactics offer different ways to handle encounters, while Hot Seat and TCP/IP modes support tactical matches between players.
