Most of the planet was destroyed by a cataclysm that caused strange, zombie-like creatures to appear. The survivors called them husks. The last remnants of humanity fight them off from strange shelters built using a variety of materials. Along the way, they try to uncover the cause of the strange purple storm that started it all.

The online shooter Fortnite was originally released as a co-op game in which a team of four players must destroy waves of enemies and complete missions on the map. Later, the free-to-play Battle Royale mode was added, with 100 players competing to be the last one standing. Both modes are popular thanks to their fast-paced gameplay, long story campaign or intense battles against other players, and wide range of upgrade options that keep players coming back for more.

1) Randomly generated content: level terrain, buildings and roads, mission types and objectives, rewards and loot, weapon blueprints, equipment, and more.

2) Gathering resources from three basic and a dozen additional materials to create walls and other barriers, various traps, weapons, ammunition and equipment (blueprints are required), and other useful items.

3) Building and destructible environments. Anything in the game can be broken down and put to better use—for example, to build a safe evacuation route for survivors or a fortress for protection. Enemies can also destroy all your structures, so be careful!

A mysterious purple storm from space struck Earth. It immediately turned 97% of the planet’s population into dozens of different types of husks, which look a bit like zombies. Different husks have different roles during attacks, and they become more aggressive and powerful during the storm. The survivors found a way to protect themselves from the threat by building energy shields around their settlements. The player starts as the leader of one such settlement. They must provide for its residents, find other survivors, look for allies to expand the shield against the storm, and discover how to return Earth to normal.

Fortnite’s main menu is the player’s base, with a map of the game world and its missions, as well as menus for choosing characters, upgrading, and more. At first, everything will be surrounded by purple fog, but as the story progresses, the fog will retreat farther from the base. The main goal is to destroy the storm for good and restore the planet to normal, but this will take 500 hours or more—that’s how it’s designed. In Fortnite, side missions are closely tied to the story, and you can only learn its shocking details by completing 3–5 side missions.

Four hero classes (Soldier, Constructor, Ninja, and Outlander—their roles are clear from their names) are divided into five rarity types: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. Characters of the highest rarity have more upgrade levels and the maximum number of abilities and skills that can be unlocked compared to those of the lowest rarity. During a mission, Fortnite players take on the role of an operative, so they can try out all the different classes and rarities. To level up characters, you need to earn experience by completing missions and development points, which are activated using special items and after unlocking skills.

This is the main game mode, which you can play with friends or solo with bots. Gather resources, complete missions, build structures, set traps, and shoot enemies. If you complete all the quests exactly as the game requires, you’ll receive extra rewards—money, experience, development points, blueprints, and more. The farther you get from your base, the harder the game becomes. You need to unlock the entire game zone.

Fortnite’s Battle Royale takes place on one giant map, and no gameplay features have been removed, including building and crafting. But you can ignore those and simply search the map for weapons, ammo, traps, and other items, which are randomly placed in houses, trees, cars, and similar locations. Over time, a purple storm surrounds the island, so you can’t stay in one place for long—you’ll have to move toward the center of the map, where it’s much more dangerous.

A full 100 players compete, but there can be only one winner. You can team up and compete against opponents in squads or duos, and revive fallen teammates. Aim carefully, as friendly fire also causes damage. A variety of vehicles will be added soon, along with several battle maps instead of just one.
