Gunbird is a vertically scrolling shooter set in a vast steampunk world, where the little wizard Marion searches for a magical mirror that grants wishes. Along the way, she encounters other eccentric characters, and dialogue varies with the chosen character combinations in two-player mode, as well as appearing in scenes before boss fights.

Players control a character and fight through enemy forces, collecting items that power up weapons and bombs that deal damage over an area. Each character has a distinct charge shot. Arcade mode offers several difficulty levels, while SCORE ATTACK uses a fixed difficulty and number of lives; scores can be compared on leaderboards.
