This multiplayer role-playing game takes place in a retro-futuristic cyberpunk internet, where players inhabit digital personas amid abandoned networks, hidden secrets, and rival operators. In hackmud, players can investigate fragments of lore, uncover secrets, engage in scams and sabotage, or use scripts to create their own tools, games, and puzzles.

The persistent world is shaped by its players, with player-run corporations, underground economies, and shifting alliances. Progress is measured through reputation and influence rather than levels: players can build businesses, find security flaws, trade data, or scam rivals. The marks system guides newcomers through the basics, while scripts made by other players offer a starting point for interacting with the game.
