Heat Signature is a space stealth action game about breaking into ships and carrying out missions across a galaxy. The player selects a target, flies a pod to its airlock, then sneaks aboard to steal loot, eliminate a VIP, or rescue a friend. Enemies can be evaded, confronted in slow-motion gunfights, or outsmarted with gadgets that distract or bypass the crew.

Time can be paused to plan moves and use devices such as teleporters and stealth shields. Ship layouts, guard equipment, and mission complications are randomly generated; when a character dies, a new one takes their place in the same galaxy. Completing missions helps liberate space stations and unlocks gadgets and challenge characters. Each character also has a personal major heist to pursue.
