Ion Assault is an arcade space shooter built around controlling ion particles and using them against obstacles and enemies. Each level has a limited supply: the spaceship absorbs particles, then releases them to destroy asteroids and opponents. Particle and fluid physics shape the action and add a tactical element.

The faster obstacles are cleared, the more enemies appear on screen, allowing players to proceed cautiously or take risks for a higher score. Power-ups improve the ship, its defenses, or its firepower, while scoring uses a multiplier system. The campaign spans more than 20 levels across four sectors, each guarded by a large boss, and features enemies with varied attack patterns.
