Mega Man X is a futuristic action platformer built around shooting and completing a series of stages. The player moves through levels, jumps, attacks enemies and switches between weapons; the game also allows the player to dismount a combat vehicle.

Story Mode offers Easy and Normal difficulty settings. Score Attack challenges players to earn points on each stage, while 80 challenges focus on achieving high scores. The Customize screen provides support items, including full armor and a full weapon supply, and lets players choose between the original and arranged music.
