A basketball simulation with a career mode that follows a player through a full season, including both games and the off-court demands of professional sport. In NBA '06, the player takes part in trades, press conferences and endorsement deals, with different career paths shaping their development and progress through the league.
Showtime Gameplay focuses on balancing individual performance with team play: flashy moves can build crowd support, while well-timed passes keep teammates involved. The enhanced AI affects player attributes and the crowd’s response. Games can be played from first- or third-person perspectives, and the mini-games include the PlayStation Skills Challenge, HORSE, 21 and 1-on-1, with single-player, versus and online modes.
