This arcade racing simulator centers on licensed sports cars racing along roads shared with traffic and patrolled by police. Players choose from eight cars and compete on three point-to-point tracks divided into sections, either in a time trial or against a computer-controlled opponent.

Races involve avoiding traffic and evading police pursuits; officers can issue tickets, and being caught can end the race. Each car is accompanied by specifications and historical details, along with images and video footage. The Need for Speed is the first entry in the Need for Speed series.
