Purgatory is a tactical turn-based strategy game about a protagonist whose death marks the beginning of events in the afterlife. To return to the world of the living, he must make his way through Purgatory and defeat its gatekeeper.
The player explores the afterlife using an overworld map, fights increasingly difficult waves of spirits, and recruits spirits to join the cause. Skill points can be spent to improve the protagonist.
