A real-time strategy game about railroad empires in North America, spanning the period from 1830 to the near future. Players lay routes, build stations, and coordinate cargo transport while deciding where to expand and how to compete with rival companies. Success depends on building prestige and reputation as well as running rail services.

Connections with government officials and union leaders can be used to affect competitors: players can prompt investigations or strikes, petition for route assignments, and push independent companies out of business. The game includes multiplayer, scenarios, and a map editor for creating new worlds; its AI is modeled on 12 real-world railroad barons.
