The Sapling is an ecosystem simulation in which players design plants, animals, algae and fungi, then place them together in a shared world. Organisms can be customized in different ways, including aquatic, land and flying animals, as well as plants with varied traits.
Scenarios task players with building ecosystems that meet specific requirements while gradually introducing the simulation’s features. Sandbox mode unlocks all tools and adds a procedural planet generator for creating desert or underwater worlds, setting up to eight seasons and changing conditions during play. Random mutations let players observe species filling ecological niches, competing with one another and dying out.
