A team-based role-playing game about the X-Men, in which a squad sets out to rescue a young mutant and becomes involved in a story that could unite mutantkind or lead to the destruction of humanity. The team can be assembled from more than 15 characters, including Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Gambit, and Beast.

During missions, players switch between squad members and choose abilities to suit the enemies and objectives: some heroes can fight through groups of foes, while others can help the team avoid detection devices. Characters earn experience that can be spent on improving their abilities and learning new fighting styles. Combat also features team-up moves, including the Wolverine and Colossus Fastball Special.
