Mostly, game journalists praise the interesting and rich open world of Atomfall, the atmosphere, the freedom of action on the level of Fallout and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, exciting gameplay, an intriguing story and a picturesque world of post-apocalyptic Britain. The game's shortcomings include potential that Rebellion did not fully realize, a lack of identity and plot cliches.

Despite some enemy behaviours that are occasionally less stable than a reactor in meltdown, Atomfall is a compelling, post-apocalyptic survival story that satisfyingly bends to your choices and discoveries no matter which direction you take.

Atomfall is a thoroughly enjoyable game that looks and plays well, and offers a compelling narrative with surrounding exploration to keep you entertained. It's well-polished, offers good replay value, encourages you to do things a little different, and isn't bad in the eyes either, with a good design that allows it to both look good and support last-gen consoles.

It's competently made, and I'll never say no to the opportunity to do some detective work, but it's just missing a spark. It's Rebellion's most ambitious game, but it falls short of the likes of Sniper Elite.
— PC Gamer
It's closer to puddle deep when it could be a lake or ocean given its cool premise. Or, to put it in a more Atomfall way, it's a pasty that doesn't quite deliver a filling that matches how tasty the pastry looks.

Atomfall is scheduled for release on March 27 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PS4. The game's first DLC has also been announced, and its minimum system requirements have been revealed.
