The closer we get to GTA 6’s release, the more interesting details we learn about the game. Game Informer recently covered Leonida’s weather, wildlife, and residents, while the developers discussed their satire of modern America and the protagonists’ story in an interview with LOVE Magazine. Now IGN has published an extensive feature with details about Jason and Lucia’s relationship, the revamped police, robberies, and car theft.

The outlet released its full conversation with Rob Nelson, the head of development and one of the heads of Rockstar North. The interview took place back in July, and IGN published its initial impressions in August. However, the full conversation offers a closer look at how many of GTA 6’s mechanics work. We’ve gathered the most interesting details in this article.

Don’t miss our previous breakdowns of Game Informer’s feature and the LOVE Magazine interview.

Key Takeaways

  • You can play as Jason and Lucia separately or together, and the team aims to restrict switching between them only when the story requires it;
  • Romance is optional and offers no specific gameplay advantage, but it affects how the story develops;
  • Spending time together and committing robberies strengthens their relationship, while ignoring your partner’s messages can weaken it slightly;
  • The protagonists’ relationship and their criminal profile are two separate systems. The profile also works differently from Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor system;
  • A crime needs a witness or a triggered alarm to start a police response. The police take clothing, vehicles, and the fact that the criminals are working as a pair into account;
  • A phone scanner and specialized tools will come in handy when stealing cars. Some trackers report the vehicle’s location to the police if you drive too slowly;
  • Almost any store can be robbed, and certain parts of the story require you to earn money before you can progress;
  • Missions will offer more freedom where possible: escaping from a high-rise building, for example, allows for several routes;
  • Pedestrians can be armed, intervene in conflicts, and notice when a player is eavesdropping or following them;
  • Safehouses are closer to RDR2’s camps in terms of available interactions, and both protagonists have their own daily routines.

Rockstar’s Approach: Two Protagonists and More Freedom

After GTA 5, the developers discussed whether to increase the number of protagonists. However, they worried that having four would mean players spent less time with each character, making it harder to form an attachment. Rockstar therefore decided to focus on just two characters whose lives are closely intertwined, working to make them compelling both individually and together.

Another major priority was freedom of choice. Nelson explains that the team wants to connect the story more closely to the open world. Between missions, players continue to deal with Jason and Lucia’s problems: earning money they need as the story progresses and spending time with their partner to maintain the relationship.

Nelson says the game features both major decisions and smaller choices. Some have an immediate, noticeable effect on events, while others matter through their cumulative impact.

Rockstar is also trying to offer more choice in story missions. The escape from a high-rise building shown in the Netflix clip, for instance, has several possible routes. The mission in which the protagonists meet Raul has a more tightly directed opening: Jason shoots while Lucia drives. But once you switch to the driver, you can deviate from the recommended route during the chase. Following it is not required to escape successfully.

The studio has no plans to abandon scripted sequences altogether, since advancing the story sometimes requires steering players toward a particular event. Still, when a story mission involves escaping the police or committing a robbery, Rockstar uses the same mechanics as the open world wherever possible. This should make gameplay more systemic, allowing it to respond to players’ spontaneous decisions.

Reading this part of the IGN interview immediately reminded me of one of the main criticisms leveled at Red Dead Redemption 2 when it launched: overly linear story missions that seemingly wouldn’t let you stray even ten meters from the prescribed route. At the time, many people on social media assumed GTA 6’s missions would follow the same pattern. That was simply Rockstar’s approach, they argued, and the studio had no intention of listening to criticism. It seems it listened after all.

Leonida’s Residents: Eavesdropping and Dangerous Pedestrians

Nelson describes Leonida as Rockstar’s largest, busiest, and most densely populated world. This goes beyond the size of the map: traffic density, the number of people, and the variety of their reactions presented a major challenge in their own right. That is partly why the team doubled in size.

Differences between pedestrians are now more apparent, and not just because of their clothing and hairstyles. NPCs also vary more in height and build. This was previously harder to achieve on a technical level: animations had to work equally well for people of different sizes when they fought, got into cars, or interacted with their surroundings. In GTA 6, the system adjusts animations to each character in real time.

Interactions with residents build on ideas from Red Dead Redemption 2: you can approach someone, greet them, or provoke them. Pedestrians also react to less obvious intrusions. If you stand too close to a group having a conversation, for example, they may notice that you are eavesdropping. Follow someone for too long, and they may become suspicious, turn aggressive, or try to get away.

One important difference from previous GTA games is that, aside from police officers, the protagonist is no longer the only dangerous person on the street. Other residents may carry weapons and get involved in what is happening. During the demonstration, Nelson interacted with pedestrians while playing as Lucia. Another group intervened, and one of its members pulled out a weapon. Nelson aimed his pistol at one of the people involved, prompting everyone to scatter.

Situations like this can therefore be resolved in several ways. You can threaten someone with a weapon, punch an opponent, wound them without killing them, or let the conflict escalate into a shootout. Nelson wants the world to do more than respond to players’ actions: it should also create problems for them on its own.

Everyday Life: Safehouses, Food, and Your Personal Vehicle

GTA 6’s safehouses are intended to feel like actual places to live. Nelson compares them to Red Dead Redemption 2’s camps in terms of the number of available interactions. In the house shown during the demonstration, Jason took a drink from the refrigerator, looked at a romance novel lying on the table, and spoke with Lucia.

Each protagonist has their own daily routine. The character you are not controlling does not have to sit at home waiting for you to remember they exist: when you switch, you may find them doing something else. During the demonstration, for example, Jason was in the shower.

You can make simple changes to your appearance at home, such as trimming or shaving your hair. For a new hairstyle, though, you will need to visit a salon. Hair salons and clothing stores offer both a shared selection and options exclusive to individual locations, giving you another reason to explore different neighborhoods.

Food provides substantial health bonuses, but overeating leads to weight gain. Working out at the gym increases strength and builds muscle. You can also go together, in which case both protagonists will work out.

You can summon your personal vehicle at any time. It holds spare outfits and weapons you have purchased. This can be useful after committing a crime: instead of looking for a store, you can change into clothes from the trunk.

Jason and Lucia’s Relationship: Optional Romance

At the beginning of the story, Jason and Lucia want to give a relationship a try, but much of what happens next depends on the player. Simply completing their shared story missions may not be enough to keep them close. That also requires spending time together outside the main campaign.

There are plenty of things to do together: pool, mini-golf, kayaking, beach walks, trips to the zoo, diving, and skydiving. Crimes also count as time spent together, so robbing stores and banks strengthens their relationship too. It really does sound like a Bonnie and Clyde simulator.

The protagonists can call and text each other. If you spend the whole day playing as one character, the other may send a message saying they are going to bed and asking whether everything is all right. A quick reply is enough. Ignoring the message, however, can weaken the relationship slightly. When the couple is close, you can also hold hands by holding R2.

Developing the romance is optional, though. Nelson does not want to force it on players who are more interested in crime and car chases. He says romantic closeness offers no specific gameplay advantage: the protagonists support each other and remain partners in crime regardless. The circumstances of the story require them to work together for most of it.

Still, the state of their relationship affects how their story unfolds. Nelson does not go into detail to avoid spoilers. The key is that players can decide for themselves how important intimacy is to this couple.

Rockstar is also trying to portray the intimate side of their relationship convincingly. Nelson emphasized that intimate scenes need careful work to feel natural and avoid becoming a caricature.

The Criminal Profile and How It Differs from RDR2’s Honor System

Alongside the relationship system, the game features a criminal profile: a separate mechanic that tracks how the protagonists behave when committing crimes. Nelson stresses that it differs from Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor system. Players’ habits can influence the world’s reactions and the story, but the developers do not consider any particular playstyle right or wrong.

Jason and Lucia are already criminals, so committing a robbery or taking on a dangerous job does not automatically mean the player has chosen a “bad” path. The profile may change if you regularly resort to unnecessary violence or take other actions that the situation does not call for.

Patterns of behavior can affect how the world responds and how the story develops. Choosing between a carefully executed robbery and a senseless bloodbath may therefore matter beyond your current wanted level. However, Nelson does not reveal the exact scale or the full range of possible consequences.

Police: New Wanted Mechanics

For a police response to begin, someone must witness the crime or a triggered alarm must report it. The police work with specific information: they know what the suspects are wearing, which vehicle they are driving, and that they are operating as a pair. Icons show what information law enforcement already has.

This creates several ways to evade them. You can switch vehicles, change clothes, leave the area, or split the protagonists up. The last option helps because the police are looking for a pair. A new hairstyle, glasses, or a cap alone may not be enough: witnesses may have remembered your clothing too.

Losing the police and being able to return safely to the crime scene are not always the same thing. Officers remain in the area they were called to for a while. During the demonstration, Nelson pointed out a section of the map where he could still be recognized.

In the city, it can sometimes be better to abandon your vehicle and escape on foot through alleys, climbing over fences. According to Nelson, escaping by vehicle at a three-star wanted level can be difficult unless you have a very fast car or a sports bike.

Rockstar encourages a “commit the crime, then make a quick getaway” approach. If you do not linger at the scene or escalate the situation by opening fire, you have a better chance of getting away without further trouble. The familiar drawn-out shootouts with police are still possible, though. During the demonstration, Nelson himself let one chase descend into chaos.

Focus mode helps you spot relevant objects and police officers. It is compared to Eagle Eye from RDR2.

Getting arrested works as it traditionally has in the series: a Busted message followed by a respawn.

Car Theft: Scanners, Tools, and Trackers

Previously, stealing almost any car required little more than pressing a button. In GTA 6, some parked vehicles will initially be inaccessible: the necessary tools become available as you progress through the story. However, you can always take a car from its driver. That familiar method is still available.

Before stealing a car, the scanner on your phone will come in handy. It shows:

  • Whether the car is locked;
  • Whether it has an alarm;
  • Whether a tracker is installed;
  • How much you can sell it for;
  • How much it will cost to register the vehicle for your own use.

One model might require a key-cloning device, while another needs a lock-opening tool known as a slim jim. Choosing a car therefore depends on more than its appearance and speed: you also need to consider whether you can get into it and how difficult it will be to evade the police.

Some advanced trackers transmit the vehicle’s location to law enforcement if it moves too slowly. Nelson encountered exactly this kind of system during the demonstration and had to keep his speed up. A damaged car will also fetch less money when sold to a fence, though you can repair it before delivery.

Driving itself has become more demanding too. Streets have more realistic dimensions, and dense traffic leaves less room to maneuver.

Robberies and Money: Earning Cash Between Missions

According to Nelson, money matters more to the story than in previous GTA games. At certain points, you will need to head into the open world and earn money before you can continue the story. You might steal cars to sell or rob businesses, for example. You can do this alone or with your partner.

There is plenty to rob. The targets shown or mentioned include stores, pawnshops, banks, and payday lenders. Preparation matters: it is worth thinking ahead about where to leave your getaway vehicle and how to escape after the robbery.

During the robbery shown in the demonstration, Nelson found a safe and then its code. He explained that he could have used explosives, but doing so would have damaged some of the loot. Meanwhile, the police arrived. Officers were preparing to take positions outside the main entrance, but it was possible to leave through a back door.

You can also steal specific vehicles requested by fences. While driving past a police impound lot, Nelson’s partner reminded him about a car a buyer wanted, prompting him to change his original plan. The pair received the entry code from the fence, then had to deliver the car while dealing with its tracker and heavy traffic.

Your partner can drive during the getaway while you shoot at pursuers. Nelson describes situations where a well-placed shot to the tires blocks the road for the police cars behind, or the protagonists make it across the tracks just ahead of a train. These moments can emerge in the open world while feeling like a scripted mission.

Other Details: Animals, Social Media, and Fast Travel

In GTA 6, you will be able to study animals and collect information about them, a feature carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2. During the demonstration, the journalist noticed a “Study” action when interacting with a dog. According to Nelson, this offers another way to get to know the local wildlife without hunting it.

Your phone includes the social network Snapmatic, where you can follow accounts and browse posts. However, you cannot publish your own posts as Jason or Lucia. Nelson explains that this is because the protagonists are hiding from the law.

For getting around, there is Ryde Me, the local equivalent of Uber. It also serves as a fast travel option. If you prefer, you can remain in the passenger seat for the entire journey and have a conversation along the way.

Nelson also notes that the game features more radio and TV advertising than ever before.

You will have to discover some encounters and activities yourself: Rockstar does not intend to mark all optional content with icons on the map.

Satire and Story: Humor Without Memes That Quickly Become Dated

Satire remains an important part of GTA, but development does not begin with choosing the jokes. Rockstar first decides on the setting, researches it, gets to know its people, and determines which events and characters will help bring that world to life. The humor develops along the way.

Long development cycles mean the team has to be more careful about choosing its targets. Specific political events, memes, and trendy slang quickly become dated. The writers therefore look for themes that will still make sense years later and make sure Jason and Lucia’s dialogue does not rely too heavily on fleeting expressions.

The protagonists’ backstories also leave room for interpretation. Some past events are stated explicitly, while others are only hinted at. The developers hope this will help players find their own connection to the characters.

Nelson believes players will get more out of the story by exploring the world and spending time with the protagonists between assignments, rather than rushing from one mission to the next. He points to RDR2, which people return to again and again, and hopes GTA 6 will inspire the same lasting interest.

At the end of the conversation, Nelson admits that the team is nervous about expectations and the scrutiny applied to every frame. He also says the game still needs polishing and that the studio is using all the time available to do so. The timing matters here: these comments were made in July, during that same demonstration.

What We Already Knew

IGN covered the revamped wanted system, car theft, and optional romance back in August. The full conversation primarily explains how these systems connect: why splitting the pair up helps them evade the police, how committing crimes together strengthens their relationship, and how the criminal profile differs from RDR2’s honor system.

The interview also builds on the recent Game Informer and LOVE Magazine features. Pedestrian variety, the dedicated team writing their dialogue, and Rockstar’s approach to satire had already been discussed. Now, however, Nelson explains the technical solutions in more detail and shows how some of these ideas work during gameplay.

Rockstar is finally trying to give players more freedom both during missions and between them. The mechanics have become more complex, and the way they interact should create more unexpected situations. Stealing a car, robbing a store, or escaping the police will now involve considering a whole range of details. If all these systems work well together, GTA 6 could deliver plenty of memorable moments and encounters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to develop Jason and Lucia’s romantic relationship?

No. They continue to work together and support each other regardless of romantic intimacy. However, their relationship affects how the story develops.

Is the criminal profile the same as RDR2’s honor system?

No. Nelson explicitly distinguishes between the two mechanics. The criminal profile tracks patterns in the player’s behavior and can affect the world’s reactions and the story.

How do the police find out about crimes?

Through witnesses or triggered alarms. They then use information about clothing, vehicles, and the fact that the suspects are operating as a pair.

Can you still take a car from its driver?

Yes. Tools are required for some parked cars, but you can still take a vehicle from its driver.

Why does an interview published in October describe a summer demonstration?

The conversation and the roughly 30-minute demonstration took place at Rockstar North in July. IGN published its initial impressions in August and has now released the full interview transcript.
