A theme park management simulator in which the player builds attractions and aims to run a profitable business. RollerCoaster Tycoon lets players design roller coasters with loops and barrel rolls, choose ready-made layouts or create their own, and add attractions such as suspended monorails and water rides. The coasters use simulated motion physics.

Parks can be decorated with themes including an ice world, a medieval setting, and Mars. To keep visitors happy, the player must monitor their needs and thoughts; profits depend on more than rides and decorations alone.
