Traveling through the world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you will often encounter interesting characters and their fascinating stories. Only this next random encounter in the game turns into an intriguing mystical story. In this guide, we will tell you how to unravel the cause of the misfortunes of the village of Stara-Kunta.
How to start the quest The Mouth of Hell
If the fast travel path passes through the village of Stara-Kunta in the Kuttenberg region, a mandatory random encounter is activated, and you will find yourself at the beginning of the quest.
Otherwise, head to the village. From the western entrance to the settlement, you will see a crowd surrounding a mutilated cow carcass. Approach them, and you will find out what happened. You will be told that monsters live in an abandoned mine near the village, to which the villagers stopped bringing offerings, and in punishment for this, they slaughtered all the cattle. You will be asked to investigate the incident, and if you agree to help, the quest will begin.
Prepare an offering to the spirits of hell in the adit
Move west from the village. On the right side, you will discover an abandoned settlement. The adit is located in the center, with three wooden crosses dug in next to it. In one of the abandoned houses, the very first from the village side, you can find a book of thieving skills.
Descending the stairs into the mine, you will witness an exciting cutscene. Henry, having delivered supplies below, notices them being taken by a mysterious knight. Suddenly, he falls and comes to himself already deep in the mine, but without his equipment.
Retrieve your belongings
As soon as you wake up, move straight, then turn left and continue forward until you notice a barrel on the left — here you will find a torch. Continue your way, pass through the hall with the altar, and climb to the second level of the mine. Go straight down the corridor until you see a knight who turns right. You should go in the opposite direction down the corridor until you find a chest with your belongings.
Escape the mine!
From the chest where you retrieve your belongings, turn right and go straight until you reach a staircase leading outside. If you leave the mine now, you will not learn the whole story of what happened, so before you set off to find your belongings, we recommend finding out the reason for the knight's confinement.
Face the Mysterious Knight
On the lower level of the mine, in the knight's dwelling, you will need to unlock a small chest on the altar. Lockpicks can be found in a basket by the cot and on the table in front of the stairs leading to the upper level. If your lockpicks break, try stealing the key from the knight. In the chest, you will find a knightly contract stating that Taras is obliged to protect the mines, and the villagers must supply him with food until a new knight arrives for duty. Now you can ascend to the upper level of the mine and inform the knight that you are relieving him according to the contract. After this, he will offer you to collect your belongings and ascend to the surface.
Endings
This quest has 4 endings:
- Best Ending: You obtained the knightly contract and managed to convince the villagers not to attack the knight. The knight's service is over, and all his sins are forgiven. The villagers collapse the mine. Besides a good reputation, you will receive money and the opportunity to train with Antonin of Visoky and Groznat of Ratborz.
- Good Ending: The knight is defeated, villagers are safe. You killed the knight in the mine or outside with the villagers. You can decide to collapse the mine or continue the offerings. You receive a small amount of money and the opportunity to train with Antonin of Visoky and Groznat of Ratborz.
- Bad Ending: Villagers are killed. You and the knight kill the villagers. You can decide whether to kill the knight or let him go. You will not receive a reward, but you can pick up valuable jewelry from the priest's body for a significant sum.
Taras Dura guarded the mines for five years according to a contract with the former abbot of the village of Stara-Kutny, Rysek, in exchange for forgiveness of sins. It is likely that Rysek believed that the mine collapse five years ago was caused by devilish intervention and therefore sent Taras to guard. Whether he truly believed that an abyss to hell had opened or simply wanted to get rid of Taras remains a mystery. In the end, he completely forgot about him. You can search the mines for the knight's notes, in which he describes his conclusions. Although this quest will not bring you great wealth, it will reveal an interesting story.
